The Taming of the Shrew

Pécsi Balett

The renascent Ballet Pécs chose the evergreen story written by Shakespeare about the all-time clever woman to be the first presentation of their own.  The shrew we have here is tricky and sly, apparently staying in the background but never losing control for a minute. Our intention is to be both innovative and respect the traditions but, at the same time, touch the heart of the audience and make them think.

2017 is the year of renaissance in the history of Ballet Pécs. Even 56 years after its foundation we believe that abstract art like modern dance can only become effective if it relies on the everyday experiences of the audience. The new ballet is based on the well-known drama, but we intend to make it a truly contemporary production in the best sense of the term.  This idea is supported by the visual   elements: composed from elements rooted in the renaissance, with an atmosphere tuned to the present, the music composed especially for the production, and the realistic presentation of eternal human relations

“The Taming of the Shrew. is a very witty work by Shakespeare; it makes us smile and cheers up our soul. It shows us the male-female relationship, and – with a subtle humour – the eternal fight, as         we do our best to outwit the other. Some do it loudly, using brawn, while others prefer cunning. And the winner is their life together, in which both of them believe to be the winner.  The story is timely even today and will remain so as long as there are people living on earth. We use the movements and forms of the 21th century to present the wonder of renaissance trying also to keep up Shakespeare's spirit, adapted to the rhythm of our times, hoping to glue the mouths of the spectators to their ears, and their bottoms to their seats.”
